Why Skip Shopify Payments?
Shopify Payments is the default in supported regions — but it is not universal. Merchants outside covered countries, businesses in certain categories, or sellers who want borderless payouts with upfront verification often need a third-party gateway instead.
This guide walks you through accepting payments on Shopify without Shopify Payments, using NYVA Pay as the example. The same general steps apply to other providers.
Before You Start
Gather these before opening Shopify settings:
- A verified NYVA Pay merchant account — sign up here
- Your NYVA API credentials from the merchant dashboard
- Your Shopify store URL (e.g., yourstore.myshopify.com)
- Admin access to Shopify Settings → Payments
Step 1: Create Your CartDNA Account
NYVA Pay connects to Shopify through the CartDNA payment gateway platform.
- Sign up at the CartDNA merchant portal
- Contact CartDNA support and request the NYVA Pay Shopify app enabled on your account
- Complete any verification CartDNA requires for your region
Step 2: Connect NYVA Pay in CartDNA
- Log in to CartDNA and navigate to Payment Gateway
- Select NYVA Pay from the available gateways
- Enter your Shopify store URL
- Paste your NYVA Pay API credentials from your NYVA merchant dashboard
- Save the connection
Step 3: Enable the Provider in Shopify
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Payments
- Under third-party providers, find the CartDNA / NYVA Pay integration
- Click Activate and complete any remaining configuration prompts
- If Shopify Payments is active, you can run both — or deactivate Shopify Payments if NYVA Pay is your sole processor
Step 4: Test Checkout
Never go live without a test order.
- Enable Shopify's test mode if available, or place a small real transaction
- Add a product to cart and proceed to checkout
- Confirm NYVA Pay appears as a payment option
- Complete payment with a test or low-value card
- Verify the order appears in Shopify admin and the payment in your NYVA dashboard
- Confirm payout settings and notification emails fire correctly
Step 5: Go Live
- Disable test mode
- Update your store policies page to reflect accepted payment methods
- Add a note in order confirmation emails that charges may appear as NYVA Pay on statements
- Monitor first week of orders for failed payments or customer confusion
Tips for Better Conversion
- Show payment icons on product pages — cards and Apple Pay badges build trust
- Keep checkout on your domain — direct providers beat external redirects
- Offer a backup method — some customers prefer PayPal; consider a secondary gateway
- Match billing descriptors to your store name so customers recognize charges
Troubleshooting
